Final result: a lapel microphone inside
the headset captures audio.
that powered the microphone lasted
an hour at the most.
Noticing that the hearing aid
battery put out 1. 5 volts, my solution
was to open up the microphone
battery case and solder in a AA battery
holder. This would provide a battery
of the same voltage but with much
greater endurance. After carving out
a small hole for the battery leads, I
closed up the case and attached the
battery holder with double-stick tape.
The results were terrific! The battery
lasts for several flights in a row
now, and the audio quality is very
good. Now my flying videos capture
both the sights and sounds of the
experience.
One other innovation was a
hands-free way to mount the
camera. I purchased a tripod mount
from a local photo supply store.
This particular mount had a quick
release and a ¼-inch threaded
bolt hole conveniently located on
the underside. I took a medium-sized spring clamp that can be
found at any home improvement
store, removed one of the grips,
and bolted the mounting shoe to
the grip. Now the whole assembly
can be securely clamped to the
dashboard of the aircraft.
