Because the builder is more likely to be on his or her
own with a plans than with a kit, you don’t want to be a
pioneer. Don’t build an airplane that is a virtual unknown
simply because it appeals to you. If the aviation public
hasn’t taken a design to its heart and built a bunch of
them, there must be a reason for that. The more popular
the design, the more builders’ support there will be available. Airplanes like Tailwinds, Thorps, and Fly Babys have
been built by the hundreds, while other designs have not
been nearly as well-received. This alone says something
about the quality of both the design and the plans. Many
plans leave a lot to the imagination, and some designs
don’t fly well, so they never become successes.
Budd Davisson is an aeronautical engineer, has logged more
than 4,000 hours of dual-given in his Pitts, has flown 300
different types, and has published four books and more
than 2,500 articles. He is editor-in-chief of Flight Journal
magazine. Visit him on www.AirBum.com.
