The specially built ring gear is mounted on the hub just behind
the prop.
At this point, Harold and Mike are exploring a parts
manufacturing approval (PMA) that would allow them
to sell complete systems for installation by your local
mechanic, but for now, STC SA026004CH allows them to
install the starter at their shop in central Michigan. The
cost is $1,850, plus approximately $500 for installation.
So far, three aircraft have had the SafeStart starter
system installed by the grandfather/grandson duo.
A 1940 Taylorcraft, a J- 3 Cub, and an L- 2 Taylorcraft
were completed last year, and if the number of phone
calls at the Hamps’ hangar during our brief visit is any
indication, installations of Harold Hamp’s ingenious
starter system on similar airplanes will keep the two
plenty busy in 2009.
