pressure plate to the filter. Slowly turn
the handle to increase pressure while
turning the cutter around the filter. To
keep the mess to a minimum, it is best
to have the cutter above the oil filter.
Soon the filter bottom will be separate
from the top of the filter can. By using
the cutting wheels, you get a clean cut
with no debris from the can to skew
your inspection.
Cutter for Larger Oil Filters
The first one I made was designed
for the small filter of my Jabiru 2200
engine. The second was designed for
the larger filters used by Lycoming
engines. The larger cutter has a base
plate size of 4-1/8 inch by 6-13/16
inch. The arcs are cut to accept a filter
that is 3-3/4 inch in diameter. An
additional 1/4-inch aluminum spacer
identical to the cutter plate should
be used to raise the cutter blades to
5/8 inch. The pictures illustrate the
difference.
