Golden West ‘Bringing Aviation Home’
The 2009 theme of the Golden West Fly-In was “Bringing Avi- ation Home,” a celebration of
homebuilt aircraft. Approximately
6,000 attendees and 600 aircraft did
just that June 19-21 at Yuba County
Airport in Marysville, California. Forums and workshops sponsored by
EAA ran all three days. Vicki Cruse,
International Aerobatic Club president, joined Lee Behel and the Sport
Class Reno racers, all flying homebuilts, performed a mock race in the
daily air show.
To celebrate International Young
Eagles Day, Lyn Freeman of Build-A-Plane gave 10-year-old aviation
reporter Evan Isenstein-Brand a
ride in the Build-A-Plane Glasair
Sportsman. This is the airplane
built by high school students in
the Two Weeks To Taxi program—
now reported on by a student!
Next year’s Golden West Regional Fly-in & Air Show will be held June 11-13
with the theme “Higher, Ever Higher.”
EAA Halls of Fame Celebration Set
EAA will again honor and recognize a group of individuals for their accom- plishments and contributions to aviation during the annual EAA Halls of Fame ceremonies set for October 16, 2009, at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh.
Open to the public, the dinner and award ceremony offers a who’s who of
aviation notables. While the National Association of Flight Instructors, Warbirds
of America, and International Aerobatic Club have not yet announced their
inductees, the following honorees have been confirmed:
Homebuilt Hall of Fame—Lance Neibauer
Ultralight Hall of Fame—Roy Pinner
Vintage Hall of Fame—Steve Pitcairn

Tax Relief in Florida
In 2008, the Florida Department of Revenue began collecting a six-percent tax on any airplane—
including those from out-of-state—
that has been purchased within six
months of being flown into Florida
for any of a variety of purposes. EAA
and AOPA have been urging for clarity on the guidelines and limitations
of the current law. That advocacy has
now shown results; new out-of-state
aircraft owners no longer need to pay
tax for short-term recreational visits.
The Florida Department of Revenue
clarified the use-tax law, stating “a
brief, recreational use of property in
Florida will not, by itself, subject an
aircraft owner to use tax.”
General aviation attracts millions
of visitors to Florida annually and accounts for more than $2.3 billion in
revenue. The clarification gives relief to new out-of-state aircraft owners who may participate in aviation
events like the U.S. Sport Aviation
Expo, Sun ’n Fun Fly-in, and other
EAA chapter events.
