There is no doubt that sheet metal is the most popular way to construct an amateur-built kit. I’ve always found it surprising that there wasn’t an outstanding book on the subject. So when we made the commitment to start revamping our instructional materials that support homebuilders, it was obvious to me where to start. I turned to Jack Dueck, one of our SportAir Workshops instructors. Jack is an experienced RV builder, excellent teacher, good writer, and dedicated volunteer. I sold him on the idea that EAA needed a sheet metal book—and all he had to do was write it! He agreed. We’re working really hard to have EAA’s Sheet Metal Building Basics by Jack Dueck ready for sale at AirVenture. I hope you pick up a copy at Oshkosh.

What’s your favorite part of the job? Helping EAA members fulfill their dreams of flight. Each time I hear “Wow, I can really build my own plane” makes my job worthwhile.

What are you building now? Currently a Hummel Bird. After that, a powered paraglider and hot air balloon.

Describe your first airplane ride: My grandfather purchased a ride on a Piper Cherokee for my brother and me. My brother got to sit in the front seat, but sitting in the back made the urge to sit in the front left that much stronger.

What did you do prior to working for EAA? Industrial model maker and antique toy restorer. I was also involved with an aviation manufacturing firm developing surveillance aircraft.
