PIE TENPOL
PLANS PRIMER
BY DOC MOSHER
There were always admirers around N34KP
near the brown arch at AirVenture 2009.
Note the hinged “flop” on the trailing edge
of the wing above the rear cockpit allowing
the pilot easier access to the cockpit.
The first plans for
the Pietenpol Air
Camper were drawn
up in the o;ces of
Modern Mechanics
and Inventions in
St. Paul, Minnesota.
They were published
in the Modern
Mechanics monthly
magazine as a four-
part series starting
in April 1931 and reprinted in the Flying and
Glider Manual 1932 edition, now available
through EAA at http:Shop.EAA.org. (Some build-
ers take the pages to their local copy shop and
have them enlarged for easier reading.) The
Modern Mechanics plans show only the original
one-piece wing and are easily identified by the
wooden Jenny-style landing gear.
The 1934 Orrin Hoopman plans show the Cub-style steel tube landing gear and still o;er the
one-piece wing. A separate set of plans for the
three-piece wing is available from Don Pietenpol.
The later supplemental Pietenpol plans (Corvair
powered) are also available from Don.
