As our wheels lifted off Runway 27 of Wittman Regional Airport (OSH),
I glanced over to see a huge smile on my wife’s face. That moment made all
my training worthwhile.
We flew north around Lake Winnebago, then east toward Lake Michigan.
My plan was to show her the lake from above, then land at Sheboygan County
Memorial Airport (SBM) to eat at a restaurant on the south end of Runway 3.
As we approached Sheboygan, I couldn’t receive the ASOS frequency. I
was baffled and tried several fixes with no success. Instead, I listened to a
neighboring airport’s weather report for winds and direction. (After returning to Oshkosh, I learned that the radio wasn’t a nav radio, so it couldn’t
receive frequencies below 118.00.) Lesson 2: No matter how thorough one’s
training, there will always be new challenges. This was one for me, and I’m
sure there will be plenty more.
After landing, we taxied to the restaurant, chocked the wheels, and
were seated at a beautiful candlelit table. Just the romantic dinner I had in
mind. We ordered our food and watched other planes come and go outside
the window.
Despite the perfect setting, I was a nervous wreck. My eyes were glued to
the clock, and each second felt like an eternity. I knew we had to leave by 7: 30
to make it back to Oshkosh before dark. Our dinner arrived at 7: 25. I apolo-
gized to my wife and told her we didn’t have time to eat.
We each ate one bite, packed our dinners in to-go boxes, and rushed out
to climb back into N430RA. Not exactly the romantic dinner I had planned.
The aroma of our dinners filled the cockpit as we flew home. Our stom-
achs growled, but our attention was soon captivated by the beautiful sunset
painted across the sky ahead of us. I’ve always enjoyed watching sunsets with
Brady and his wife, Katherine, on their first flight together.
