AS WE FINALIZE THIS ISSUE, EAA members have
received their first “new” EAA Sport Aviation.
Reaction has been swift, unprecedented, and
overwhelmingly positive. Frankly, the responses
have exceeded our expectations!
EAA President Tom Poberezny, Membership
Vice President Adam Smith, your publications staff,
and the entire headquarters team that developed
the new magazine established a goal of creating the
best possible magazine based on what you told us
you wanted in surveys and through focus groups.
Your enthusiastic response to the extensive changes
is far better than we anticipated.
Hundreds of members, both longtime
EAAers and some who’ve just joined us, as well as
representatives from the aviation industry, have
e-mailed or called to share their observations. The
majority is delighted. We’ve heard comments such
as “What a super improvement,” “More than I ever
expected,” “Impressive; great selection of articles
and photos,” “There’s something for everyone,” and
Rarely does a magazine redesign come off
without some hitches, though, and the main
concern voiced was that the type size was too small.
We made the same observation, and we’ll increase
the size of the text beginning with the March issue.
(We were too far into production of this issue
to make that changeover this month, but we’ve
incorporated some improvements where we could.)
Others noted that the magazine was “floppy,”
and we’ve fixed that with this issue. Previously,
we printed the cover on 80-pound paper, but we
increased the paper stock to 120-pound with this
issue. We’re also going to a matte finish to give the
magazine a better feel. (Inside, we’re printing on the
same 40-pound paper we’ve used for the past year.)
Our goal is to consistently deliver the premier
aviation magazine for people who fly for fun.
We’ve intentionally expanded our content mix to
be inclusive of all members who find a home at
EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. And, we’re using our
extensive array of electronic publications (view
them at www.EAA.org/newsletters) to provide
more in-depth knowledge and information to
specific interest groups. We want our magazine
and e-publications to show all aviation enthusiasts
clearer pathways to participation. Are we meeting
that goal? Please share your thoughts with us at
Feedback@EAA.org.
