James Morris Hummel
8/5/1915–2/4/2010
JAMES MORRIS “MORRY” HUMMEL, EAA 8892,
died at the age of 94. He was born in Bryan,
Ohio, to James and Manata (Caswell) Hummel.
He married Kathryn Ridgway in 1939, and she
preceded him in death in 1989. He married his
second wife, Myra Branch, on June 29, 1993, and
she preceded him in death in 2009. He is survived
by son Ronald (Connie) Hummel, daughter Sandra
Kay (Larry) Partee, five grandchildren, and eight
great-grandchildren.
Morry, perhaps best known in the aviation
community as the designer of the Hummel Bird, also
worked in auto body repair and operated his own
body shop for many years. He flew his own
aircraft until three years ago and has been
honored with numerous awards for his design
and building of aircraft. He was a member of
Faith United Methodist Church in Bryan and
the Lite Flyers ultralight aircraft club.
