ST ORCH
VS.
STORCH
AN ORIGINAL AND A HOMEBUILT REPLICA
IN 1936, WHILE MANY aircraft manufacturers around the world were
building bigger and faster aircraft, one visionary, Gerhard Fieseler,
a 22-victory German ace in World War I, chose a different path. He
focused on how slowly an aircraft could fly. What his design team
came up with was quite possibly the ultimate in short takeoff and
landing (STOL) aircraft: the Fi 156 Fieseler Storch (Stork).
TOP: Kermit Weeks’ original Storch. BOT TOM: Steve Lunds’ 3/4 scale replica.
