Alaskan pilots must have great spot
landing skills to fly into the places they
regularly visit. In Oshkosh, where long
runways abound, pilots must be
intentional about keeping short-field
skills honed.
TRYING IT OUT
After returning from Alaska, I rented the
REMOS and went flying. As I turned final
for Runway 9, I saw three big colored dots
painted on the 6,000-foot runway and
was reminded there is one week a year
when spot landings become very important on this giant runway. During EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh, the controllers
don’t clear you to land on a runway; they
clear you to land on a dot.
I called the tower and requested per-
mission to land long on the green dot. My
OK, we’re not saying that really happened
or that it would have changed history... but it
makes you wonder. On the other hand, you
never have to wonder whether you’ll get a
