Harry (Jim) Rice
08/24/1930–05/24/2010
HARRY (JIM) RICE, EAA 642345, of Paulden,
Arizona, died at age 79 while doing touch-and-goes in his plans-built Pietenpol. When he was
20, Jim went into the United States Air Force
and was stationed in Texas, where he learned
to fly, learned airplane mechanics, and had a
Luscombe for personal flying. Jim was a chief
pilot for Midway Airlines in Chicago. He later
built a Turner and the Pietenpol, as well as
helped restore EAA Chapter 658’s Cessna 140.
Jim logged 20,000 hours and was a commercial
pilot, certificated flight instructor, airframe and
powerplant mechanic, and technical advisor for
Chapter 658.
In 2003, Jim organized a chapter build of
a half-scale Wright Flyer that now hangs at
the Prescott, Arizona, campus of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. His father was
Harry Rice, of the Ohlsson & Rice (O&R) model
airplane engine manufacturer.
Jim is survived by his wife, Dorothy Wessels,
four children, and one sister.
Friends and family are invited to post obituaries and
sign a memorial guestbook online for Jim and other
EAAers who have “gone west” at
www.EAA.org/obituaries. The
names and stories of each person enshrined on EAA’s Memorial
Wall in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, are also available here.
