purchasing tickets for the EAA Share the
Spirit Sweepstakes and Young Eagles Raffle.
Two lucky people were the winners of this
year’s grand prizes: an Aviat Husky and a
2010 Ford Mustang GT convertible.

to tell her she had
won the 2010 EAA
Share the Spirit
Sweepstakes Husky.
“I didn’t recognize the area code, so I almost
didn’t answer it,” she said. But she did, and
when she realized she and her husband,
Zachary, had won, Carol said, “You’ve got to
be kidding me! It was a major shock.”
“It’s been a while since we had a working
plane,” she said.

DON VAN CURA SR. EAA 214222, of Chicago,
Illinois, bought his Young Eagles raffle
ticket after visiting the Ford tent to get a
hat for his daughter. “I buy a ticket every
year, but I never expect to win,” he said.
When he found out the next day he had
won the grand prize 2010 Ford Mustang
GT convertible, he had no problem driving
back to Oshkosh with his wife, Sonia, and
daughter, Raquel. “It’s wonderful,” he said.
“I can’t imagine a nicer trip to Oshkosh.”
The car was provided by Ford Motor
Company and Kocourek Ford of Wausau,
Wisconsin.
Another trip to Oshkosh no problem for
Mustang winner
DESPITE TORRENTIAL RAINS that saturated the
convention grounds, extraordinary efforts by
EAA staff and volunteers allowed AirVenture
2010 to go on and draw an estimated 535,000
people and more than 10,000 airplanes to
Wittman Regional Airport.
Attendance was 7 percent below the
blockbuster event in 2009, which was
expected. The weather probably contributed
to the lower attendance figure, EAA
Chairman Tom Poberezny said.
More AirVenture numbers:
• 2,380 showplanes, including 1, 106
homebuilt aircraft, 635 vintage airplanes, 374
warbirds, 115 ultralights, 120 seaplanes, and
30 rotorcraft.
• 777 commercial exhibitors, up from 750
in 2009.
GATINEAU HOSTS CANADIAN
NATIONAL EAA FLY-IN
THE FIRST CANADIAN National EAA Fly-In
takes place September 17-19 in conjunction
with the Vintage Wings of Canada “Victoria
Cross” air show in Gatineau, Ontario.
Plans include a tour of the Vintage Wings
collection at Gatineau, a busing excursion
to Rockcliffe for the Battle of Britain
re-enactment, and a tour of the Canada
Aviation and Space Museum.
Aircraft parking and camping as well
as parking for RVs will be available. EAA
Chapter 245 and a newly-formed EAA
Warbirds squadron will host the fly-in. Nav
Canada will declare the airspace as Class F
with arriving and departing aircraft under
air traffic control. Transponders are not
required, but radio communications will be.

nations.

GATHERING OF EAGLES
RAISES $2.1 MILLION
EAA’S ANNUAL GATHERING OF EAGLES during
AirVenture raised $2.1 million in support of
the EAA Young Eagles program and other
association efforts that inspire young people
to become engineers, aviators, astronauts,
scientists, innovators—the aviation pioneers
of tomorrow.
The most coveted item in the auction—
Ford’s one-off SR- 71 Mustang created in
collaboration with speed merchants Carroll
Shelby and Jack Roush—garnered a winning
bid of $375,000.
Other distinctive items auctioned included
a trip to Shanghai to pick up a new electric-powered Yuneec e-Spyder, some hangar
flying with Harrison Ford, a DC-2 flight with
Clay Lacy, First Officer Jeffrey Skiles’ flight
bag from Flight 1549, a five-day hang glider-aerobatics course, and use of the new VW
Beetle Red 5 throughout AirVenture 2011.
CHAMBLISS DONATES PROTOTYPE EDGE TO AIRVENTURE MUSEUM
EAA’s Elissa Lines, left, hands over the keys of the 2010 Ford
Mustang GT convertible to Don Van Cura Sr.
Aerobatic champion pilot Kirby Chambliss,
EAA 261512 donated his Zivko Edge 540
(N540KC) to the EAA AirVenture Museum.
N540KC was the prototype model built in
1993 for Chambliss, who went on to win the
1998 U.S. National Championship and the
2000 Men’s Freestyle World Championship
in the airplane.
