10TH ANNUAL AVIATION DAY
ON MAY 14, 2010, Kunda’s Private Airstrip in Collegeville,
Pennsylvania, held its 10th annual Aviation Day for the students
of Arrowhead Elementary School. To celebrate the anniversary,
three skydivers jumped from a plane and landed on the strip, to
the surprise of the students and their chaperones.
Aviation Day started in 2001 after Ed Hoelker, EAA 128321,
flew his granddaughter Rachel to school, creating quite the
buzz among her fourth-grade classmates. Ed and Stanley
“Chip” Kunda, owner of the airstrip just across the road from
the elementary school, decided to create Aviation Day, inviting
students to learn about and even sit in airplanes.
On May 18, 2001, teachers led 80 students across Level Road
to sit on the grass near the hangar. After an introduction, the
students were asked if they had any questions. Many hands
shot up, and the questions didn’t stop. Later, the children were
assigned in groups to one of four airplanes: a Cessna 172, a Piper
PA- 12, a homebuilt Sky Raider, and an Aeronca Champ 7AC. The
children each sat in an airplane and learned about the controls
as they moved the control stick or wheel. Afterward, one of the
pilots took teachers for a short flight around the field.
As the students left the airstrip after two hours of aviation
fun, they were given an aviation magazine and a souvenir, such
as a small balsa glider, a kite, or a hand-spun propeller. A week
later, Chip received a bulging manila envelope, holding thank-you notes decorated with drawings of airplanes. “They were our
rewards for holding the first Aviation Day,” Ed said.
