friend of mine who’s done a whole lot of airplane camping put it, as
he stuffed an air mattress into the back of his Super Cub, “You know,
the ground’s gotten a lot harder than it used to be.”
What’s more, the technology gizmos available now are pretty
cool—even if the portable versions come with so many cords,
batteries, antennas, and such that they tend to add to the clutter of
a cockpit rather than reducing it. But that’s also where a teenage
copilot comes in handy. We were trying out two new Garmin GPS
products on the trip—a glareshield-mounted portable 496 and a
“notebook”-sized 696. After struggling to carve out time to read
the manuals and familiarize myself with both units and all their
paraphernalia in the couple of days before we departed, I finally
handed the whole mess over to Connor.
“You are officially in charge of IT (information technology) for
this trip,” I announced. “Your job is to learn how to operate both of
these well enough to get me whatever page or information I want.”
I held out the four thick manuals that came with the units. Connor
nodded, politely took the manuals…and put them on a side table.
As far as I could tell, he never even cracked them open. Instead, he
started going through the components of the GPS units themselves,
turning over antennas, looking at connections, and then, once he
figured out how to turn the units on, playing them as he would a
new video game.
