MEMBERS/CHAPTERS IN ACTION
MICHIGAN AVIATION HALL OF FAME HONORS
JIM MYNNING, EAA
17448, was inducted
into the Michigan
Aviation Hall of
Fame May 21. First
soloing in 1946, Jim
became an airline
pilot and captain
with Capital Airlines
(which merged with
United Airlines in 1960) from 1955 to 1990.
In 1974, he was named United Airlines Pilot
of the Year for safely landing a 737 with a
dangling engine.
In the 1950s, Jim was at the forefront
of the air show movement. Jim introduced
and performed several air show acts, flying
in a Piper J- 3 or Super Cub. He has owned
and co-owned three grassroots airports
that were home to members of an air
show group known as the Ann Arbor Air
Force. Jim has volunteered for EAA for
many years and is chairman of air show
operations at AirVenture.
YOUNG PILOT HAS HIGH ASPIRATIONS
Ever since he can remember, Taylor De Ley,
EAA 1058541, of Yorba Linda, California,
dreamed of being a professional pilot. The
son of a private pilot, Taylor carefully devised
an ambitious plan he hopes will land him in
the left seat of an airliner.
He started flying gliders at age 13, soloing
at 14. On his 16th birthday, he earned both his
glider pilot certificate and soloed in a Super
Cub. Earlier this year on his 17th birthday, he
received his private pilot certificate with 230
flight hours in his logbook.
Immediately after finishing summer
college classes on July 8, 2011, he’ll depart
Corona Municipal Airport on a flight around
the perimeter of the United States piloting
the RV- 4 he built with his dad, Luc. The
plane, N884TD, was acquired a couple of
years ago as a partially finished project,
and father and son spent about six months
finishing it. The flight plan includes Taylor’s
first visit to AirVenture Oshkosh.
Taylor has heard plenty about Oshkosh
and is looking forward to experiencing
AirVenture firsthand. His parents have
expressed some concern over congested
airspace when he flies into Wittman
Regional Airport, but he’s not that worried;
he’s downloaded a copy of the NOTAM to
his iPad and plans to be well-prepared for
the flight.
