AIRVENTURE ‘NAVY DAY’ INCLUDES
EVENING WITH ASTRONAUTS
THE WEEKLONG CENTENNIAL OF NAVAL
AVIATION celebration at AirVenture includes
a special “Navy Day” on Wednesday, July 27,
capped off by an evening forum featuring
Apollo astronauts and former naval aviators
Capt. Gene Cernan and Capt. Jim Lovell.
Adm. Gary Roughead, current U.S. chief of
naval operations, will also join Cernan and
Lovell, and former Good Morning America
host David Hartman will moderate.
Navy Day features a full day of activities
surrounding the centennial, including
dedicated forums on ConocoPhillips
Plaza and Warbirds in Review, a special
tribute during the afternoon air show, an
Honor Flight featuring 80 World War II
naval veterans departing AirVenture for
Washington, D.C., on a Southwest Airlines
737, capped by the evening program at
Theater in the Woods, whose programs are
supported by M&M’S.
Cernan, EAA 456102, a Navy fighter
pilot, is one of only two men to have flown
to the moon twice and was the last man
to step foot on the moon as commander
of Apollo 17 in 1972. Lovell, EAA 320945,
was a Navy test pilot and served on several
space missions, including Apollo 8 in 1968
that was first to orbit the moon and the
Gemini 7 space flight that lasted nearly
14 days in 1965. Lovell also commanded
the Apollo 13 mission that became a
model of crisis ingenuity and teamwork,
immortalized in the 1995 movie Apollo 13.
