Narco Avionics declared bankruptcy after 65
years in business.
So I was intrigued that two prominent GA
avionics manufacturers, Dynon Avionics and
PS Engineering, recently entered the radio
business. Both dominate their respective
market niches, audio panels and glass cockpits for homebuilts, and both have the surplus
resources to enter a new market. And cleverly, neither is initially going head-to-head
with established radio makers.
PS Engineering is breaking new ground with its
PAR100EX, which combines an audio panel, intercom, and
a COM radio into a single 1.3-inch-high package that’s the
size of a traditional audio panel.
DYNON AVIONICS HANDHELD RADIO
When I interviewed Robert Hamilton for my
April 2011 column, he told me the worst-kept
secret is that Dynon Avionics plans to intro-
duce a panel-mount VHF communications
radio, perhaps within a year. But he didn’t tell
me Dynon would first stick its toe in the mar-
ket with a handheld radio announced in April
in a novel way at Sun ’n Fun.
