Evolution
Introducing some new elements to EAA Sport Aviation
EVERY MONTH SINCE MARCH 2008 we’ve sent
a survey to 4,000 readers of EAA Sport
Aviation to understand how each issue has
been received. Thank you to everyone who
has spent a few minutes on the survey; your
feedback has been extremely valuable in
shaping the direction of the publication. It has
been pleasing to see a big improvement in our
readership and satisfaction scores, particularly
since the magazine’s complete redesign in
January 2010.
But a magazine must continually evolve
to meet the needs of its readers, and with this
issue we’re pleased to introduce some new
elements to Sport Aviation that we believe
members will find informative, educational,
and entertaining. Not a radical change;
consider it more of a tune-up based on your
continued feedback.
First, we’ve moved Letters to the front of
the magazine…where you’ll find the Letters
page in most magazines (page 8). We’re also
replacing the Guest Editorial section with a
new feature called Heroes & Legends (page
14). This month, Associate Editor Kelly Nelson
sat down with Robert Hays (from the movie
Airplane!) and learned about his aviation roots
and interests. Next month, we’ll feature the
cast of hit TV series Flying Wild Alaska, and
future interviews with George Lucas, Jim
Lovell, and Bob Hoover are in the pipeline.
This is an “audience participation” page—look
for opportunities to submit questions on the
EAA Facebook page and EAA Forums, and
we’re open to your suggestions about whom
you’d like to see interviewed as well.
We’ve also gathered all your favorite
columnists into one section of the magazine
beginning on page 52. This month, Brady
Lane reveals a secret he’s been keeping for
several months—he’s building an airplane in
his basement!
In the Better Pilot section we’ve added two
new elements to highlight EAA’s increased
focus on safety. In What Went Wrong (page
82), Editor-at-Large J. Mac McClellan will
review an NTSB accident report each month.
In I’ll Never Do That Again (page 86), we invite
you to share a flying incident or experience
that taught you a valuable lesson. This month
Paul Poberezny talks about his first flight
in his Primary glider. By learning from the
experiences of others, we can all become better
pilots. Send your stories to mac@eaa.org.
