DISCOVERY AIR IS LAUNCHING A northern Canada delivery service
using hybrid airships to service isolated villages and mining
camps. This type of hybrid aircraft, originally developed for long-term reconnaissance by the U.S. military, is able to stay aloft both
because of its aerodynamic design and because of the helium lift.
According to the company, these heavy lift air vehicles will be able
to handle up to 50 tons, fly at 115 mph, and land and take off without
environmental damage and without airports thanks to the design’s
four propulsion fans.
Discovery Air hopes to be delivering supplies in the $40 million
airships by 2014.
