windows of the terminal—before they begin the
long climb up the tall air stairs to their seats in
the cabin.
Capt. Frank Moss is already up in the cockpit
readying the plane for flight. Frank undoubtedly
has more experience with radial engine transports than anyone else on the planet after decades
of flying cargo in remote areas.
As I climb into the cockpit, Frank brings forth
his first few witticisms of the day. He has a mischievous sense of humor, and he’ll say the most
outrageous things in his understated South
Carolina drawl.
I settle into my seat and look around trying to
soak up the moment. The cockpit of the DC- 7 is
a maze of levers, gauges, and switches, most of
which I now actually know how to operate.
While we prepare for the flight, the passengers
happily take their seats as Karyle and Maureen,
