O’LENA EXPANDS EAA YOUTH PROGRAMS ROLE
BRIAN O’LENA, who
joined EAA in
2009 as youth programs manager, is
expanding his role
to include management of the
EAA Young Eagles
program, the largest youth aviation
education program in history,
with more than 1. 6
million young people flown. As manager
of Young Eagles and Youth Pathways,
O’Lena will be responsible for the administration and development of EAA’s programs that inspire and encourage young
people to discover and explore aviation.
In addition to Young Eagles, O’Lena’s
responsibilities will also encompass the
EAA Flight Plan programs that introduce aviation to young people, including
Sporty’s Online Flight Training Course,
which is available free of charge to all
Young Eagles.
O’Lena and Michelle Kunes will be
the primary contacts for Young Eagles
at EAA headquarters, as part of the department headed by Young Eagles cochairman Jeff Skiles, who joined EAA
full-time last month as vice president of
chapters and youth programs.
O’Lena has flown more than 100
Young Eagles. He is currently a member
of EAA Chapter 252 in Oshkosh and has
also been active in EAA Chapter 838 in
Racine, Wisconsin, and is a former Young
Eagles coordinator for Chapter 838.
FROM THE COMFORT OF SOMEONE ELSE’S HOME
IF CAMPING AT EAA AIRVENTURE Oshkosh
just isn’t your thing and other lodging
is booked, or if you’d just rather have a
home away from home for your Oshkosh
experience, a private rental is the perfect option. Thousands of people who
come to AirVenture rent space in private
homes for their stay.
Along with hotel and dormitory listings, www.VisitOshkosh.com includes
hundreds of private rentals. Both entire
residences and individual rooms are
available. Some rentals offer a full bed
and breakfast experience, and some even
provide transportation to AirVenture.
Jack Morrissey, EAA 282894, rented
a bedroom for AirVenture 2011. The
homeowner, Mark Cook, had been
renting out his home for 25 years.
One of his regular renters, a couple
from Texas, has stayed with him for
20 years. “Mark is at his local bakery
by 6 a.m. to make sure his doughnuts
and rolls are fresh and right out of the
oven,” Jack said.
“Over the years I have heard many
tales from various attendees regarding
what a great family they are staying
with, and how great the meals are,”
Jack said. “One I remember is a family
who rents out rooms, and the father
is a retired airline captain and insists
on feeding his renters breakfast in his
full airline uniform.”
For private rentals, www.VisitOshkosh.com
allows users to search by number of
rooms and for specific amenities, in-
cluding Internet access, car rental by
homeowner, and pet-friendly homes.
The website provides contact informa-
tion for each listing, and some include
photos and even videos.
