LINDBERGH FOUNDATION HONORS LONGTIME
EAA SUPPORTER JAMES C. RAY
THE LINDBERGH FOUNDATION presented
its 2012 Spirit Award to longtime EAA
supporter James C. Ray, EAA 137309, at
a celebration at Fantasy of Flight in Polk
City, Florida, on March 29. The event
coincided with the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In
at Lakeland.
The Spirit Award is one of the
foundation’s two major awards and is
presented every five years. It honors
“pioneering achievements in an aviation
career with the spirit and character that
represents the best of this nation.”
James flew B-17s in World War II
and was active again in the Korean
War. After his military duties he flew
his Cessna 170B for transportation as
he established businesses as a rancher,
oil and gas explorer, and real estate
developer. He has also logged more
than 3,500 hours flying single-pilot in
a Citation business jet.
EAA CHAPTER 301 AWARDS
FIRST SCHOLARSHIPS

EAA CHAPTER 301 in Colorado has awarded
scholarships to two Young Eagles in the
Denver area. Chapter members have
always supported the Young Eagles
program, and more than 2,600 young
aviators’ names are now in the “world’s
largest logbook” thanks to the enthusiastic
pilots and ground crew volunteers.
High school students Mark Reese
and David Harris each received
$1,500 for flight training. Mark will be
continuing his flight training, begun as
a recipient of the Tuskegee Scholarship,
at Aspen Flying Club. David will start
his pursuit of a private pilot certificate
at Skyraider Aviation. Both clubs are at
Centennial Airport, southeast of Denver.
