Time Flies
Remembering 60 years

AS THE OLD SAYING
goes, “Time flies.” I’ve certainly enjoyed the flying
I’ve done throughout my lifetime. I’ve been able to sit in the cockpit
of so many airplanes during my flying career. What a privilege and
what an honor.
It’s been a wonderful and exciting life for Audrey and me and all
those early-day people who supported my efforts to start EAA. It
was a dream that I never thought would come true—of encouraging
people to love and respect each other, all because of aviation. The
wings, I guess, of angels in so many ways.
Of the 60 years I’ve worked with EAA
and served your organization, a little more
than 30 of those were as a volunteer, like so
many of you in your chapters or in your
community. All the time spreading the
word of aviation and the Experimental
Aircraft Association’s standards of family,
love for each other and, of course, anything
that flies.
Aviation has always had its challenges,
one being the authorities that govern our
activities, whether that be local, state, or fed-
eral. I was privileged to recognize that to
make progress for aviation and the amateur-
built movement our main energies should be
applied to the then-Department of
